According to the U.S. Department of Justice statistics show that 67% of the time resistance to criminals is effective. In only less than 9% of the situations does resistance make the situation worse. COMMENT: If the perp wanted to work, the perp would’ve gotten a job.

ATM cash machines have been incorporated in our way of life. They offer a real convenience to those on the run, but at the same time offer an element of risk. Using an ATM machine safely requires awareness and a little planning. Just because an ATM machine is open and available twenty four hours a day does not mean that it is safe to use it.
Most ATM robberies occur at night between the hours of 8PM to midnight. ATM robbers are usually males under the age of 25 years of age and most work alone. ATM robbers usually position themselves nearby waiting for a victim to approach and withdraw cash. Most ATM robbery victims are women and were alone when robbed.
Most claim that they never saw the robber coming. Most ATM robbers used a gun or claimed to have a concealed weapon when confronting the victim and demanding cash. If you or your family members use the ATM cash machine on a regular basis, here are some tips that can make the process safer:
• Carry a stun gun, pepper spray, pepper gun, or mace spray
• Use only ATM machines that are in a well lit area with high traffic areas. Don’t use ATM machines that are remote or hidden such as being located behind a building, behind pillars, walls or away from the public view.
• Choose an ATM machine that looks and feels safer, even if it is a couple of miles out of your way. Try and limit your use to daylight hours. Take someone with you after hours, if you can. When you drive up to an ATM location, scan the area for any suspicious persons. If you see anyone suspicious standing nearby or sitting in a car, drive away. When you approach an ATM on foot be prepared and have your access card ready. Memorize your personal PIN number to prevent loss and speed the transaction. Never accept help from a suspicious male ahead of you at the machine.
• If you use your car, at a drive thru ATM machine the same rules apply. Keep the car in gear, with your foot firmly on the brake, while using the ATM machine. Keep a close eye on your rear and side view mirrors during the transaction. Robbers almost always approach from the rear on the driver’s side. If you see anyone approaching, drive off robber, just give up your money without argument.
• Avoid ATM machines adjacent to obvious hiding places
• Have your card ready and leave quickly, not counting your cash in public
• Beware of offers for help from strangers during an ATM transaction
• Don’t fight with or attempt to follow the robber
• Drive or walk to a safe place and immediately call the police
• If you are confronted by an armed robber, use your pepper spray, mace or pepper gun to defend yourself. The other option is to give the money to the robber and get out of there as quickly as possible.

On the lighter side of crime information, we’d like to share some crazy crimes committed by some - not so intelligent criminals. Some were flat out dumb and others just happened to pick the wrong day to perpetrate the wrong crime and paid for it. Who said Providence doesn’t have a sense of humor?
A man was arrested after throwing a brick into the Plexiglas window of a jewelry store. The brick bounced right back and hit him in the head which KO’ed him until local police arrived!
A gang of drug smugglers cleverly decided to use a propane truck to cross the border from Mexico into El Paso, Texas. They had emptied the propane and concealed about 3 tons of marijuana inside the tanker truck. As things sometimes turn out, the smugglers didn’t realize, that they had spelled the name of the gas company incorrectly on the truck! BOOM!
When arrested for stealing a car, the judge asked the suspect, “how do you plead?” Instead of pleading guilty or not guilty the man said, “Before we go any further, judge, let me explain why I stole the car.” The judge issued his ruling in record time.
Two service station attendants refused to give any cash to a drunk robber, the man threatened to call the police. The clerks still refused, so the robber called the police and was arrested.
Los Angeles police got a break out of a dumb suspect who couldn’t shut up during a lineup. The detectives asked every man in the lineup to repeat: “Give me all your money or I’ll shoot!” The suspect shouted, “That’s not what I said!”
Oakland police spent two hours attempting to subdue a gunman who had “holed up” in his home. Finally, after police fired ten tear gas canisters into the home, officers discovered the man, standing beside them, shouting to come out and give himself up.
A 20 year old woman was arrested for robbing a Howard Johnson’s motel. She was armed with an electric chainsaw, which wasn’t even plugged in.
Two Michigan bandits entered a record shop waving revolvers. The first one shouted, “Nobody move!” When his partner moved, the startled first bandit shot him.
When his revolver failed to fire at his intended victim during a robbery in Long Beach, California, the robber looked down the barrel and tried it again. This time, it worked.
A man attempted to siphon gasoline from a motor home parked on a Seattle street. Well, he got much more than he’d hoped for it seems. Police arrived at the scene to find a man sick and curled up next to a motor home near spilled sewage. Police said that the man admitted to trying to steal gasoline and plugged his hose into the motor home’s sewage tank by mistake.

Many schools of self-defense offer special self defense courses for women, teaching techniques aimed at avoiding or combating any type of physical confrontation. Martial arts can play an important role in women’s self defense and are a great way to help build confidence, strength and skills to combat any potential attacker. There are many different types of classes for women in martial arts and when practicing martial arts, women will find that their strength improves significantly after only a few months of practicing the art.
In general, an attacker will test a woman before he actually assaults her. By making inappropriate comments or behavior, a perpetrator will try to find out how assertive and strong a woman is. If she responds in an assertive way, most perpetrators will eventually run away. Martial arts can help you reach this level of assertiveness.
The Goals of Martial Arts Training
Learning martial arts is not just good for self defense but there are many other things than physical strength and techniques that martial arts women can benefit from, such as:
Mental and physical health
Your physical health will improve greatly due to the (often physically demanding) exercise. Martial arts for women will also help you improve your mental strength as you will be taught to focus one one single thing. Concentration is a very important part of martial arts training and being able to form a mental picture of your success is beneficial to your effectiveness as a martial arts student.
Self confidence
By learning a certain martial art you will be able to focus on one goal, physically and mentally. You will feel stronger mentally because you build up a sense of security and a knowledge deep down that you will be able to manage and deal with a potentially dangerous situation.
Learning body dynamics
You will learn about movements and their impact on your body and on the opponent’s body. Knowing when to strike and how to do it will enable to you to use your body to its full potential if you have to defend yourself.

We live in a world that is dangerous. We read in the papers, hear on the radio and see on the TV about attacks robberies, rapes and murders. Maybe you have personally witnessed or been a victim of an attack. As Christians we know that the source of all this is sin. Man has a sinful heart which causes him to do sinful things. We read this in Romans 3. In verse 15 it states “they are swift to shed blood”. So what are we to do?
The Bible tells us in the sermon on the mount to” turn the other cheek”. Does that mean that if we are physically attacked we can’t defend ourselves? If we see someone being attacked are we just to yell for help and do nothing to rescue the victim? Would it be sin to intervene if it meant attacking the attacker? These are important questions. One of the reasons this is important to think about now is because if we are ever in that type of situation we won’t have much time to think. Either you act or you don’t.
The scripture in the Sermon on the Mount seems to be referring to someone being insulted because of the use of the word slap which would do little physical harm but would hurt a man’s pride. There are some scripture verses that seem to promote self defense such as Luke22:35-38 where Jesus tells His disciples to buy swords for protection. This would indicate that Jesus approved of using weapons in self defense. On the other hand Jesus did rebuke peter for cutting off the servant’s ear. I think Jesus’ reply gives us insight into how He looks at this issue.
In Matthew 26: 47-54 we have the story of Jesus’ betrayal by Judas. As the crowd tries to seize Him Peter drew his sword and cut off a servant’s ear. Jesus heals the servant and rebukes the disciple. Then He said,” Do you not think I cannot appeal to My father in heaven and would not send 12 legions of angels. But how then should the scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” It seems clear that the reason for the rebuke was because it was God’s plan that Jesus should go to the cross and die for our sins not because He is against defending yourself or a loved one.
As I said before we live in a dangerous and sinful world. We as believers are called to stand up for what is right and against evil. God has given us the civil government with its laws and officials to protect us, but they can’t be everywhere. There may be a time when you have to step up. What if you or a loved one is attacked would you be able to defend yourself or protect a loved one? Will you be ready? This is a thorny issue, but don’t let that keep you from searching the scripture, your heart and God. I do believe that the scripture does teach that we can defend ourselves and others from evil.
This does not mean that we go around looking for fights or that we should feel we are responsible to protect everyone. This does, however mean that we should search the scripture, your heart and God. The scriptures teach that a man should be convinced in his own mind on issues that are not clearly forbidden or approved. I ‘m convinced that the scripture does teach that we can defend ourselves and others from evil.

This is old, but fascinating and true news. January 5th, Bakersfield, CA - A 9-year-old Bakersfield boy is getting a lot of attention after saving a girl from a vicious pit bull.
Drew Heredia and his female friend were walking the girl’s small dog when the pit bull attacked it. The girl tried to intervene but then the pit bull turned the attack on her.
Heredia didn’t run away but instead he jumped on the pit bull and applied a choke hold that he learned at a local Brazilian jiu-jitsu studio.
Heredia held the dog in the chokehold until an animal control officer arrived.
The girl was taken to the hospital with numerous puncture wounds. She and her dog are expected to recover.

Fox Point, Wis. — A robber gets more than he bargained for when he targets a Tae Kwon Do studio in suburban Milwaukee.
The robber thought he could quietly slip in and out of David Kang’s studio in Fox Point with some loot.
What he didn’t realize is that he would encounter a Tae Kwon Do master who wasn’t about to let him off the hook. Kang was giving a private lesson Tuesday and heard someone in his office. Kang found the man going through his closet, grabbed him by the neck and sat him down while he called police.
The robber took off and Kang gave chase, finally catching up with the man and holding him by the neck until police arrived.

Ladies workout pants for Jiu Jitsu can tend to be cut a bit snug. Also depending on who makes what, sizes can be all over the place. If you find something you’re comfortable in, the size on the label doesn’t really matter.
Wal-Mart has some cotton pants that don’t seem to be cut snug. You may also want to look for “yoga pants”, they tend to be cut a bit looser.
You can order gi bottoms (as seperates) from most martial arts suppliers (your school might be able to get them for you too). Gi pants are unisex (read: mens) so the fit is a lot looser than women’s workout pants. They may not work for you because the crotch tends to be cut deeper than they are with ladies pants.
Trying a specialty shop like Dick’s Sporting Goods or an outfitter like REI, and asking the staff for suggestions may help. I’ve seen a variety of activewear there.
